The floral biology of the olive II. The effect of inflorescence load and distribution per shoot on fruit set and load
نویسندگان
چکیده
The effect of inflorescence number and distribution along the shoot on the level of fruit-set was studied using `ON' year olive trees with a high level of floral differentiation. Reduced levels and different inflorescence distribution patterns were created artificially by hand inflorescence thinning. In most cases, removal of up to 50% of the inflorescences had either no effect on the total amount of fruit load per shoot or increased it significantly. Thus, the percentage of fruit set increased with the reduction in inflorescence number due to both, a higher percentage of fruitful inflorescences and higher numbers of fruits per inflorescence. Inflorescences on the distal half of cv. Barnea shoots were less fruitful than on the proximal half. With cv. Manzanillo no such difference was found. Single inflorescence distribution significantly raised the level of both, the fruit load and fruit set compared with distribution of the inflorescences along the shoot in pairs, although the amount of this increase varied with the different thinning levels. The actual percent of fruit set on a flower number basis increased in parallel with the reduction of their number in response to inflorescence thinning. # 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Flowering and fruit set in olive: a review. Esmaeil Seifi1*, Jenny Guerin2, Brent Kaiser2 and Margaret Sedgley3
Olive is one of the most ancient fruit trees and has been cultivated for its oil for thousands of years. A mature olive tree produces about 500,000 flowers. They are borne on inflorescences termed panicles. The number of flowers and their distribution on the inflorescence are specific for each cultivar but can change from year to year. The flower position on the inflorescence affects its gender...

In many perennials, heavy fruit load on a shoot decreases the ability of the plant to undergo floral induction in the following spring, resulting in a pattern of crop production known as alternate bearing. Here, we studied the effects of fruit load on floral determination in 'Hass' avocado (Persea americana). De-fruiting experiments initially confirmed the negative effects of fruit load on retu...
متن کاملEffect of Exogenous Application of L-arginine and Sodium Nitroprusside on Fruit Abscission and Physiological Disorders of Pistachio (Pistacia Vera L.) Scions
Pistachio yield are often negatively affected by some physiological problems such as abscission of inflorescence buds and fruits, deformed or blank nuts, and non-split shells. In the present study the effect of exogenous application of arginine (Arg) (a substrate for nitric oxide (NO) synthase) and sodium nitroproside (SNP), as a NO-donor was investigated on yield production, fruit and inflores...

متن کاملSpring temperatures alter reproductive development in grapevines
Background and Aims: Climate variation contributes to fluctuations in reproductive output, and spring temperature is thought to influence flower production in grapevines. For 3 years, we studied the influence of temperature from before budswell through to the appearance of individual flowers on reproductive development in field-grown Cabernet Sauvignon while minimising the influence of other mi...
